I realize that this fall engagement session is a bit out of season, but after I missed sharing it last year, there no way that I was going to wait until this coming fall to share it with you—it’s too good. If you’re looking for ideas for what to wear for your photo session and how to incorporate pops of color that work together, these two have nailed it.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens + Downtown Ann Arbor Engagement Photos

Grace and Toby are the kind of couple that makes you instantly feel like you’ve been best friends forever. They met in med school at Michigan, and I’m 100% sure that their warmth and charm is welcomed by their patients each day. I loved everything about this session—and the evening light was perfect for pulling out my film camera a few times.

Grace, I’ve loved keeping up on your adventures and reflections on Facebook, and I was thrilled to see updates about your next little adventure coming later this year 😉

Quick note: if you’re planning a session at Matthaei Botanical Gardens, you do need a photo pass, but it’s well worth it.

Lake Michigan Maternity Photos in St. Joseph, Michigan

I met Dan as a counselor at VBYC summer camp when we were both teenagers, then I met him again in college. Then, I met him again when I lived in Chicago and he was introduced to me as Leah’s boyfriend. Talk about a small world experience. It’s been so fun to be along to watch these two get married (I photographed their wedding at Millcreek Barn), then to meet little Violet as a baby (see that one here) and now to get to head back to St. Joseph to take family photos before they met their dear little boy.

These are the summer days that make being a photographer so worth it. Since St. Joseph is two hours away, I called up my friend, Kate, to meet me early for a weekday beach day. We enjoyed some quiet time (I hardly knew what to do with myself without kids running around on the beach to watch!), caught up and grabbed some pizza and ice cream before the evening session—it was the kind of day that will make you fall in love with St. Joe all over again.

Rebecca and Adam’s wedding was special to me for a few reasons. First, I immediately felt connected to these two when they told me about their trip up to the Traverse City area and how much they had fallen in love with the city. The whole Leelanau Peninsula is my happy place—we actually plan to split our summers between our home in East Lansing and the Northport area in the future, and I’m hoping to shoot the majority of my weddings in that area by then.

Second, this was the first wedding where I brought my film camera along for a few shots, and it was so fun to take a little time to get these shots (the right two photos above were both shot on film).
