Pam + Matt: Frederik Meijer Gardens Wedding in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Pam and Matt flew in from Boston to get married at the Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids last summer. This was my second time at the gardens—this place is such a gorgeous setting for a summer wedding. The light was perfect, the gardens were quiet and the couple and their guests were full of smiles. At the end of the ceremony as we were packing up, a heron flew out onto a rock by the waterfall. Perfection.

This wedding can best be summed up with the lyrics from the song that was playing as I packed up my bags at the end of the evening—”Everything is awesome.”

Kristy + Kelly: St. Gerard’s Parish and Eagle Eye Golf Club Wedding

Kristy and Kelly are the kind of laid back couple that you just want to kick back and have a beer with (Kristy was a bride-chilla, as my friend Kate would say). Their wedding day was focused on family, love, laughter and a good mix of living in the moment and remembering happy memories together. Kristy and Kelly, thanks for letting me be a part of capturing the new memories that you created that day.

Baby Lucy

Here’s the thing—there was a long period of time in my career as a photographer when the idea of photographing newborns sent me running. I absolutely refused to do it. I respected it as its own art form, one that required a whole separate set of talents beyond those that I had as a wedding and lifestyle photographer. Then I had my own daughter, and I became a bit obsessed with getting the perfect squishy newborn photo. I chased down the pregnant women I knew (and some who I didn’t know) and asked if I could practice with their babies. I took an awesome workshop with two amazingly talented newborn photographers. I learned posing and patience and preparation and all of the other things that go into making a newborn photo shoot successful.

And here, more than a year after my first shoot with my own daughter (one that I never shared on this blog because I didn’t feel particularly proud of it), I’m getting into a groove with newborns. I’m excited about spending cold winter days in an 80 degree room with tiny new people. I’m excited to capture these moments that are so incredibly different from weddings, but just as special and fleeting. It’s going to be a good year.
