Sweet & Simple Newborn Photos

When Zelda was born last year, I realized just how different newborn photography is from wedding and lifestyle photography. It’s basically a whole different league. I gained a new respect for what goes into newborn photography, and I became immensely more intrigued by the challenge of it.

Over the summer, between weddings, I started to study the ins and outs of photographing newborns, and I was able to practice with a few friend’s brand new babies. Still, I knew there were a few things that weren’t quite falling into place the way I wanted them to—the backdrop would look too wrinkled or the posing wasn’t quite there.

This November, I finally convinced myself to invest in my skills and drive down to Indiana to train with two incredibly talented newborn photographers—Leah Hoskins and Traci Shupert. These two started running the Sweet & Simple Newborn workshops earlier this year, and it was so inspiring to visit Leah’s studio and see them both in action.

Now I’m putting a call out for newborn “models” to help me refine my newborn posing skills and build out my portfolio this winter. If you or someone you know is having a baby this coming January or February, I would love to photograph the baby between 5-14 days old. Email me at allie (at) alliesiarto.com, use the subject “Newborn Model” and tell me the baby’s gender (if known) and due date. In exchange for a model release for my own portfolio, I’ll give you five high res digital images. All sessions will be at my home in East Lansing.

The photos below were styled and posed by Leah and Traci—I take no credit for the magic they worked there. I did take and edit the images.

Phil+Maggie: A Game Day Proposal Under Beaumont Tower

Phil proposed to Maggie under Beaumont Tower the morning of the Michigan State vs. Michigan game in October. I was a bit giddy and nervous as I waited and watched for them from a bench near the tower. I kept my camera in my bag at the ready—I didn’t want to be too obvious when Maggie walked by. When the moment came, they walked right by me and over to the circle in the shadow of the tower, where Phil offered a kiss in the tradition of the tower (it’s said that a Spartan is destined to marry his/her sweetheart if they kiss under the shadow of the Beaumont Tower). She said yes (yay!), and I headed over to introduce myself, congratulate them and take a few photos on campus before they headed out to enjoy some tailgating. Well done, Phil. Very well done.

Christine+Sean: Huron Hills Church and UofM’s Michigan League Ballroom Wedding

Let me tell you something about Sean and Christine. Not only did they win me over right away when I met them in Holland for their engagement session this summer, they also managed to convince me that UofM can be a pretty cool place (unless we’re talking sports, in which case I naturally default to my Spartans all the way) and Sean was without a doubt the most enthusiastic dancer of any groom I’ve ever met (and that includes my husband, Jeff, who has a pretty impressive fishstick dance). Christine and Sean—congratulations on a beautiful weddings day filled with joy and laughter.

Thanks to Chris for second shooting and capturing some great shots throughout the day.

I was with Christine and the girls while Chris was with Sean and the groomsmen before the wedding. I loved opening the photos on my computer and coming across this little gem:

And thanks to Chris for getting the shot on the left behind the scenes before Christine walked down the aisle with her dad.
