Dottie, Matt and Lola: Family Life Photos

When my sister’s family was planning their move into a new house in DeWitt for this spring, I started to think about my own family’s move when I was two years old. I have a few very faint memories of that first house, and I always wished I had more family photos to see how my family lived when I was a baby and toddler.

Around the same time that I started thinking about this, I did a family photo swap with another photographer in the area. That inspired me to take family photos with my sister’s family around their house so that my two and four year old nephews could look back and see how they interacted together around the “old” house (I’ll post those photos soon—stay tuned). After the shoot, I asked my sister if she knew anyone else who would be moving soon who might want family photos to remember their house (my sister’s an awesome realtor in Lansing—shameless plug if anyone’s looking to move). She put me in touch with Dottie. Dottie, Matt and their daughter, Lola, will be moving to the St. Louis area later this summer. They’ve been in their house for five years. They renovated it, decorated it, turned the house into a home and brought their daughter home to this place two years ago. I love that I had a chance to capture them in their first family home, and I hope that these photos make Lola smile twenty years from now when she’s wondering what life was like in those early days before the family moved.

Rebecca + Jason: Michigan State Campus Photos

Rebecca and Jason are a rare pair. She’s from Australia. He’s from Massachusetts. They met at Michigan State, got married in Australia, and now they’re both finishing up their PhDs before moving to Massachusetts to work at the same college together. Before moving, they wanted to document their lives here at Michigan State with their two energetic pups. I loved walking around campus with these two and hearing stories from their time together at MSU. Rebecca and Jason, I wish you a smooth transition into the next chapter of your lives together. Thank you for letting me spend an evening with you soaking in campus and all of your wonderful stories.

Meredith + Andrew: English Inn Wedding

I’m slightly obsessed with the English Inn—it’s definitely on the list of my favorite local wedding venues. The landscape make me feel like I’m stepping into an exotic destination wedding right here in town. Meredith and Andrew managed to put together the perfect wedding—amazing couple, stunning weather (Meredith mentioned that the weather report called for zero rain and “abundant sunshine”) and the perfect setting for an intimate gathering of friends and family.

Loft310 Penthouse Suite Bridal Tea Party

When my best friend, Kate, asked me to be her matron of honor for her wedding this August, I was thrilled. As I started planning a bridal shower the bride-to-be, I was immediately overwhelmed by options: venues, food, invitations, flowers, games…I felt like I was back in the shoes of a bride planning her own wedding.

I knew that I wanted the shower to be bright and cheerful. I was thrilled to find the Loft310 Penthouse Suite in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan. The suite used to be the home of the couple who owns the building, but lucky for us, they moved out when they had children and converted their loft into one of the most beautiful event spaces I’ve ever seen.

After we decided to turn the shower into a bridal tea party, the bridesmaids all worked together to create a simple menu with small plates that would be easy to eat in a casual setting so that we didn’t have to set up formal dining for 25 people. Each bridesmaid handmade a unique dish, from caprese salad kabobs and fruit kabobs to lavender and honey cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and gingerbread shortbread. One bridesmaid even brought fresh cut lilacs from her own garden. We turned the baked goods into favors for the guests by offering to-go boxes for guests to fill up before leaving.

The staff at Loft310 lined up beautiful tea cups and saucers for guests, along with hot tea and coffee. We brought in some iced tea to complete the tea party, and our guests sipped and enjoyed themselves all through the gift opening.

We had to grab a few photos of the four college roommates together again.

I’m clearly a bit behind the game on this one.

Before leaving, I went around the suite to grab a few more photos—I’m totally inspired by the design. Maybe bits of inspiration will work their way into our own home renovation later this year.
